The next meeting of the Northern New Jersey Celiac Support Group will be on Thursday, October 22, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Dorothy B. Kraft Center, 15 Essex Road in Paramus, New Jersey. It’s time for our Third Annual BAKE OFF ! We are calling all our bakers – and we know you are out there. We’d love to taste your best efforts at made-from-scratch baking We would like to share recipes, taste your best kitchen dessert creation and exchange great ideas. If you don’t bake or can’t bake, please don’t fret. Come and enjoy the goodies, vote on the best and get some wonderful ideas you can pass along to a friend who loves you and does bake! Please see the details for our baking event further down in this agenda. We will be joined at this meeting by Garden Lites All Natural for a delicious sampling of their vegetarian souffles. These are being marketed at area stores such as Shoprite. They are a welcome addition to the “what’s quick and easy for dinner” menu. We will also have a sampling of soup from Kettle Cuisine (www.kettlecuisine.c Additionally, Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods has sent along a 50 cent off coupon to use on their line of frozen gluten free products. Once only available for a short time during the Passover holidays, Dr. Praeger has expanded their gluten free line to include items that are available year round. Everyone at the meeting will vote for best in category, and a prize will be awarded for the first place winners! The next meeting of the Northern New Jersey Celiac Support Group will be on Tuesday, September 22, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Dorothy B. Kraft Center, 15 Essex Road in Paramus, New Jersey. We are delighted to be hosting Dr. Peter Green, Director of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University, New York City. Dr. Green is one of the most well known authorities on celiac disease and has authored numerous papers on various aspects of the condition. He has been honored for his teaching of medical students and residents, and frequently lectures to both medical and lay audiences, nationally and internationally. We look forward to both his lecture and the Q & A to follow. Please plan to be at the meeting early, as Dr. Green will be speaking at 7:00 promptly. And please RSVP your attendance, as seating is limited. Joan Popkin will be joining us at this meeting, bringing delicious bagels from her company, Joan’s GF Great Bakes, Inc. What could be better than a fresh bagel that you bake in your own home? Well, Joan’s line includes many other wonderful gf goodies, including easy to bake chocolate chip and sugar cookies, English muffins, Sicilian pizza and so much more. Ann Whelan, editor/publisher of Gluten Free Living, will be joining us for an insightful discussion on the current status of gluten free labeling. Ann brings together first-hand knowledge of celiac disease and extensive experience in journalism and publishing. She has worked for health-related magazines, helping to launch five publications before founding Gluten-Free Living. Be sure to come and hear this knowledgeable, thoughtful speaker share the very latest in the continuing labeling saga. Also at this meeting will be certified chef Einat Mazor, founder of Bliss Fine Foods and author of the new cookbook Mastering Your Gluten & Dairy Free Kitchen. Einat will be bringing a delicious sampling of some of her specialties, as well as her book for sale. The next meeting of the Northern New Jersey Celiac Support Group will be on Tuesday, September 23, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Dorothy B. Kraft Center, 15 Essex Road in Paramus, New Jersey. Nutritionist Anne Roland Lee will be joining us with a discussion on “Living the Gluten Free Lifestyle.” Anne is currently Director of Nutritional Services at Schar USA. She was previously the nutritionist at the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University in New York, where she was involved in patient care and research. Ms. Lee has developed numerous educational materials on the gluten free diet, published several articles on the diet and presented her research at the International Celiac Symposium and national dietetic and physician assistant meetings. She was also asked to present at the FDA hearings on labelling. You will be able to sample and purchase a variety of products from Katz Gluten Free Bake Shop. Katz is making delicious chocolate dipped cookies, challah rolls, breads and authentic tasting rugelah (think rolled dough cookies filled with chocolate or cinamon sugar and nuts). I never thought I’d see these delicacies gluten free but here they are and they are worth the wait. Also at this meeting we will sample a couple of dishes made with mixes from Full Flavor Foods, LLC. This company is making a line of easy to prepare gravies, soups and sauce mixes that add a whole range of yummy flavors to the gf diet. Now you can make your own cream soup using the added ingredients that you fancy (cream of carrot was delicious!) and home-made macaroni and cheese – you choose the pasta and add their fresh tasting sauce. My whole family was impressed with this line when we taste-tested it over the summer. We will also have a wide variety of samples from Schar USA. Schar is one of a very few companies marketing a fiber rich bread. Their product line is extensive, including great crackers, cookies, those chocolate hazelnut bars that remind us of a certain popular candy, and fine pasta products.
