I have never been diagnosed with Celiac Disease but I know I am allergic to wheat gluten. I've been off for almost ten years and feel great most of the time. I just want to know if anyone that has been diagnosed with Celiacs experiences migraines and vomiting if they eat gluten. I've never had the diarrhea problems that they say are the main symptoms, just excess mucus causing runny noses and the headaches with vomiting. I'd really like to hear from anybody about this issue. thanks

Hi,
I was sick for 7 years with vomiting, constipation and migraines. I was never tested for celiac because I didn't have the "typical" symptoms. I finally got the skin rash that goes with celiac and I was able to get a proper diagnosis. I felt better after being on the gluten free diet after only 4 days. Remember wheat free is not gluten free. |

Hello,
Mike here,I'm 54, I have been diagnosed in March 2007 as Celiac by Endoscopy,by which they take a biopsy of your small intestines. I also had the rash which is Dermatitis Herpetiformis for about 20 years, intense ictching all over my legs and small of my back and back of arms and forearms. Drove me crazy! I also had the symptoms of diarrhea,(no headaches) I also was diagnosed with severe iron deficiancy anemia. I had to have two pints of packed red blood cells transfused. I was a walking dead man. I am 5'10" and down to 145 lbs when diagnosed. I also have GERD (acid reflux). Since I have quit wheat, rye, oats, and barley,I have dropped all the symptoms. What a relief. Especially the itching, that was the worst. If you want to read up more on it go to: Celaic.com one of the best and oldest sites out there. Also celiac.org One of the biggest problems with Celiac is it is misdiagnosed most of the time. Most family Doctors are not given enough info about the disease. The only Dr's sufficiently trained are the gastroenterologists, because they specialize in the intestines. My daughter has also been diagnosed by blood, endoscopy, and gene testing. She also has full blown Celaic, she had massive migranes and bloating, for years. I don't know for sure how long. But they virtually disappeared after cutting out all gluten. Amazing! To be cured all you have to do is stop eating wheat gluten. So the drug companies will not fund any research into Celiac, they can't make any money! That's really pathetic! It all comes down to the almighty buck. |

Hey Mike,
Jeepers...the rash for 20 years! I can't imagine. I was diagnosed in Sept 2001 and had been to 4 different gastroenterologists over a 7 year period and nobody tested me for celiac. One of the doctors was even at Georgetown University Hospital. I got dermatitis herpetiformis in June of 2001 and my gastroenterologist actually told me that I should see my family doctor...he didn't think it had anything to do with my other symptoms. My daughter got on line and found a picture of the rash and linked it to celiac. I called the GI doctor and he agreed to give me the blood test. The blood test was positive. I went in for the biopsy to confirm the diagnosis but the doctor didn't have the right scope so I never got a confirmed biopsy. Needless to say I switched doctors and have been happy and gluten free ever since. My daughter does not have celiac but my son does. I like the CSACeliacs.org website. There have been lots of improvements in the quality of food over the years but I agree....there's a long way to go. |

Misdiagnoses are common and there seems to be a poor understanding of celiac disease in the medical community.
Luckily the simple blood test is becoming very reliable and can be used to give a simple and early indication of what the problem could be |
